James W. Sire’s “The Universe Next Door” -A Commentary

July 21st, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

In the Universe Next Door by James W. Sire, we see a natural transition from the Naturalist to Nihilist viewpoint, offered by Sire as a natural movement of one world view to another.
In the Naturalist world view, which came from Rene Descartes’ belief that the universe is just a “mechanism of matter which people comprehended by mind.”
The book talks about a decline in humanity because of Descartes’ world view, because we found ourselves not able to think together and we lost the concept of unity.
Naturalists, as the book states: “See no God, no spirit, no life beyond the grave.” What I discovered in my reading was the fact that Naturalists though they state this, actually end up having some values of their own. They make go by a set of morals. They may be good husbands, wives, or friends. They may even get mad at an evil movie.
However, Nihilists, as Sire states, are the people we often end tip seeing in mental institutions or as my mom calls them-funny farms. What is the difference between a Naturalist and Nihilist? Not a whole lot, but yet something quite big!
Naturalists have no faith, no god, really believe that all matter just came about and we are a part of it. (Nihilists end up losing all hope often because they take it a bit deeper.
Not only is there no God, no spirit, but also there are no moral values. Anything is possible. It is very easy to see how one could lead to the other, yet very hard when you look at it another way.
It’s easy to see how a Naturalist could become evil, because with no God, there is no Bible, or book to live our lives after. There is no faith. It really could become sad and lonely to say the least.
Nihilists, though, as Sire states: “The first reason naturalism turns into nihilism is that naturalism does not supply a basis on which a person can act ~ are not self conscious, we are machines.”
Nihilists see themselves as machines capable of any act, any choice, because not only is there no God, no faith, but there are unlimited choices, all of them good, because after all I’m a machine, and machines can turn off and on and do anything they want at any given time.
I wonder what an example of a modern day Nihilist would be? According to Sire, we’ll find a lot of them in mental wards. I wonder if some of them may be lurking about in the Church of Satan as well. There is a Satanic Church and bible you know. They believe it is good to sacrifice young babies to Satan as long as it promotes his agenda.
Sire talks about comparing Naturalists to Carl Marx, one of the founders of Communism It was eye opening to see how the naturalists, including Russia, became one society. Naturalism had the good qualities of everyone being equal, working to eliminate poverty, and working for the good of another.
Isn’t it crazy though, how Russia came to be an enormous power and Sire also talks about Lenin, one of Russia’s leaders, who pushed communism as an acceptable form of living and working?
People believed in Communism and Marxism. Sire states that Naturalism is still alive and growing everywhere in the world. That really saddens my spirit. Of course, Naturalists would say I had no spirit, and Nihilists would say I have no real reason for being.
I am happy to say that my faith in God is the most important thing in my life. Why? I have a reason for living and being. My reason is to “Love the Lord my God, and my neighbors, with all my heart, soul, and mind–and strength.” I much prefer it to naturalism or nihilism!

Nice Girls Do It, Too!

July 21st, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

It is absolutely true that when online dating sites first started they were populated entirely by perverts, sexual predators, weirdoes, social misfits and emotional wrecks but that is no longer true. Online dating has gone mainstream and has lost all the social stigma it once suffered. Single people of all ages, races, religions and both sexes do it. Short people, tall people, thin people, obese people do it. People from every developed country in the world do it. Nice girls do it, too. The reasons people join online dating sites are as varied as the people who join but mostly they join for three very good reasons: (1) Time (2) Money and (3) It works.
Time: You can go through hundreds of online profiles and look at hundreds of pictures in the same length of time only one real world date takes and the screening is already done for you. You can tell right away if a guy is only looking for casual relationships or long term commitments. How many times have you worked 8 hours, gone home and spent another hour getting ready to go out then gone to the local hang-out for singles only to see the same old jerks, losers and drunks that are always there?
Money: For the price of one evening out on the town you can enjoy an entire month of meeting men from the safety of your own homeĀ….do it in your jammies or sweats and with a beauty facial working its magic.
It works. It really does work if you are willing to do the right things. Write a profile that grabs attention, post recent pictures of yourself, be fun and interesting while chatting with the men you meet on line, answering emails promptly and being on time for a pre-arranged online meeting.

How Do You Get Your Ex Back When He Has a New Girlfriend?

July 21st, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

As a dating coach, I always get this question:
How do I win back my ex.
The question gets even trickier when it is:
How do I win back my ex when he is already seeing someone else.
In most cases, I do not believe in going back. There is usually a very good reason for the breakup. You can be friends with your exes but jumping back into a bad relationship is very rarely a wise move.
Most of my clients initially do not want to hear this so:
That said, here is the answer to your question:
How do you get your ex back when he has a new girlfriend?
In most cases the key to winning your guy back is patience. Most women screw up their chances of getting back together with their guy by being too forward, clingy or by throwing a fit if he does not want to get immediately back together. He did not want to hear you complain, or see you sob your eyes out when he was dating you, why in the world would you think that this technique would work now?
Also, men find unavailable women desirable. Throwing yourself at him actually makes you less valuable in his eyes.
Why would he want to get back together with someone like that?
Instead, let him know that you would like to still be his friend. Do not bring up past issues or act bitter in any way. You must appear to be happy and enjoying your life. No needy pleas for him to come back.
He will be expecting you to either be angry or upset. Don’t prove him right. Do the unexpected.
Be there as his friend and as a good listener when he and his new girlfriend inevitably argue. Lend a sympathetic ear. If she is just a rebound girlfriend he may begin to remember all the reasons why he dated you in the first place. Never speak badly of her to him, allow him to do that. You are just being really sweet and supportive.
Date someone else, if possible. I prefer the suggestion of being seen out with a male friend frequently, so that you are not leading some new guy on. Seeing another man interested in you may remind him that you are an attractive woman.
Actually develop yourself. Take the classes that you never had time to take, when you were dating. Take the extra time with your appearance that you forgot to do, as your relationship progressed. If you do not feel beautiful and seductive, why would he believe that you are and want you back?
For a really great demonstration of how to do this technique correctly, rent the movie French Kiss with Meg Ryan.
1)First they show exactly what not to do to get your guy back.
2) Then they show you how to approach him and the new girlfriend. This scene might actually work better overseas than in the states. They are more reserved. Here the new girlfriend might go for your throat. The point of this scene is not to go in with guns blazing. Be pleasant to the new girlfriend and wish them well.
3) Finally, there is a great scene where she goes to her ex to settle their relationship and divide up their stuff. He has dumped her for this French woman who he calls a goddess. Meg Ryan does not storm in like the scorned woman. She is classy about the whole thing and of course he is immediately enamored again.
Once a man realizes that you are perfectly ok without him, he begins to wonder if there is something valuable that he has lost. We tend to do the same thing, which is probably why this article even exists.
Choose class over throwing yourself at him in a wild attempt to “win him back.” Start moving on with your life and he will find himself scrambling to catch up.

The Boxer – A Courageous Clown?

July 21st, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

The Boxer has a very distinctive personality that makes them extremely good family pets. They’re antics can seem almost clownish at times, though they tend to be very protective when their territory is being invaded. The heavy jowls, doleful eyes and perky ears are among the physical features you’ll notice about a Boxer, while the tendency toward joyful greetings and playfulness are the personality traits that tend to be most evident.
The Boxer, sometimes called the German Boxer, originated in Germany as the result of breeding two German dogs that seem to be closely related to the mastiff. Bulldogs were later introduced into the line to produce the Boxer we know today. Until early in the 1900s, the Boxer lines were rather loose with breeding practices left solely to those raising these dogs. The standard today calls for a fawn, brindle and/or red coat, a squared off body and thick neck, among other features. Depending on the breeder and the statutes of the region in which the breeder resides, tails may be docked and ears clipped.
There were several purposes for the breed when it was being originated. One of the most-often cited was the use of Boxers as bull bait, but Boxers were also used as hunting dogs. The heavy body of the Boxer also made it ideal for pulling and some Boxers were put into service pulling carts for various purposes. Somewhere during the history of the Boxer, someone discovered that these dogs could also be trained to herd, and they became fairly widely recognized as a herding dog.
The same natural intelligence that made these multi-purpose dogs popular a century ago makes them excellent family pets today. They’re quick to learn, though they do sometimes have a willful streak and may even sneak around in an effort to get their own way. Patience will typically be rewarded with this breed and the Boxer is a quick study. That’s made them coveted family pets, but also sought-after canines for obedience competition and even some rescue operations.
Boxers tend to be rather large dogs and may weigh in at somewhere around 70 pounds. Their size, natural tendency toward protectiveness and their ability to learn quickly make them excellent choices as watchdogs. They can be very vocal, alerting your family of potential danger and anyone (or anything) presenting a threat of the potential to be tackled by a Boxer!
Despite their size, these dogs can stay very agile and playful for many years. As a rule, they love to play games and will usually be willing to play long after their people have tired out. The beauty is that they’re usually willing to play anything – ball, Frisbee, fetch, tag or whatever game you can devise.
The personality of this dog just can’t be pent up. You’ll find the he shows off all sorts of antics with no prompting, sometimes to convey a message (‘I want to go outside to play’) and other times simply to garner some attention. Those clownish acts are just one more way the Boxer will endear himself to his family.

eBay Scams To Watch Out For!

July 20th, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

There are many eBay scams out there to keep an eye out for when you are selling on eBay. This article will cover a few of the known and not so known scams to be aware of. Whether your a causal seller, or a professional seller on eBay, you need to know about these scams so that you can take measures to prevent or recognize if its happening to you.
Bid Shielding
This scam is something you need to watch out for as a seller on eBay. Basically the scam is run using two separate eBay accounts. The scam works like this. You put your item up for auction. Lets say your item is worth $100 and you have no reserve. The first bidder (scammer) comes along and bids $5 on your item. Right after that, another bidder working with the first bidder comes along and bids $200 on your item. Since your item is only worth $100, you receive no more bids for the duration of your auction. Right before your auction ends, the first bidder backs out and cancels their bid, leaving the $5 bidder the winner, effectively shielding all other potential bidders because of the $200 bid.
Because of the potential for this scam it is always good to have a reserve on your auction. Also, I would put some sort of disclaimer on your auction stating that if you suspect bid shielding on your auction, you reserve the right to back out of the sale. Its always a good idea to keep an eye on your auctions and watch for this type of behavior. If you suspect this is happening to you, be sure to report the parties involved to eBay right away.
Wholesale List Scam
This scam takes advantage of the fact that many people dont pay close attention or read the fine print on an auction. This scam is targeted at buyers who are looking for deals on electronics and technological items on eBay. The wholesale list scam is basically an auction that looks like the seller is offering a great deal on a product like an iPod for example. They may have a buy now price of $40 for an iPod that is worth $150. However, if you actually read the fine print on the auction, you will find that you are not really buying the iPod. In fact you are purchasing a wholesale list.
To avoid this scam, just be sure that you read the entire details of the auction before making a bid or a purchase. Basically, just use common sense. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is, so read the auction carefully.
Bad Check Scam
This eBay scam is exactly what it sounds like. The bad check scam is simple. Someone purchases your item and sends you a check as payment. You receive the check, and send out the item. However, 2 weeks later you find out the check bounces and now you are out your item and the money.
To avoid this, simply do not send out any products until the check has cleared.
Spoof eBay Emails
This eBay scam is an attempt to get your personal information and/or eBay account information. Basically the scammer sends you an email that looks like its from eBay. The email may direct you to a website (that also looks like eBay) where it asks to you verify your information. In reality, the website is created by the scammer to collect your personal information and use it for identity theft. The scammers can be very tricky and make everything look very official.
To avoid this scam, you need to be wary of any emails that you get. The first thing you need to check is the email header. Emails from eBay, will have ebay.com as the last part of the senders email. Also any links that are in the email may be directing you somewhere other than where they say they are. Also copy and paste the links into your browser, and only visit official links that start with eBay. If anything seems suspicious to you, forward the email to eBay and wait for their response. They will let you know if its legitimate or not.
In conclusion, most people you run into on eBay are good honest people and not out to scam you. You may do business on eBay for years and never run into any of this. However, occasionally these things do happen so its important to use common sense and use your best judgment when it comes to this stuff. Just be aware that it can happen, and take the necessary precautions and you will be fine. There is a lot of money to be made on eBay, so dont let anything scare you off. Keep yourself armed with knowledge and information and you will be successful out there in the auction world!

Fresh Shellfish Is Not Lacking In Variety

July 20th, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

Wild varieties are equally delicious. Clams are a very popular addition to pasta dishes. Hard clams, also called quahogs, live in sandy coves and can be caught when the tide is low.Fresh shellfish is a wonderful thing to eat all year round. It includes clams, scallops, mussels and more. Farm-raised cultured mussels are fresh and readily available. A great dish to enjoy with butter and garlic is stuffed quahogs. And, of course, there is always clam chowder!
During the summer months, fresh shellfish will take your mind off the hot weather. For a light yet delicious meal, consider an appetizer of raw or barbequed oysters. These tasty treats can be bought in most markets as well as chosen farms that specially breed them to sell. If you are lucky enough to live by a port or in a town near the ocean, you will probably find oysters easily and for a reasonable price.
The scallops are meatier than clams and require very little preparation. Sea scallops are delightfully large, though must be shucked (removed from their shells) almost immediately after capture to ensure they don’t lose moisture and die. It is important not to overcook scallops, or you will end up with a chewy, inedible taste.
Mussels have blue-black shells and brown hairs called byssal threads attached to their shell. Their meat is usually an orange color and they are full of protein. As with clams, mussels taste best steamed and should remain encased in their shell until cooked.
Other fresh shellfish can also be crabs and lobsters. Compared with their small brethren, lobster and crab are bigger and more substantial. Of all fresh shellfish, lobster is undoubtedly the priciest but then it is a cuisine favored by both high-end restaurants and gourmets alike.
Crab is maybe the most popular shellfish and is widely bought and eaten. The crabbing industry is a multi-million dollar one. While eating crab can be messy and often difficult, special tools have been created to make cracking crab easier. Once you get down to the meaty goodness of crab legs, you will want to make this fresh shellfish part of your everyday meal planning.
People are so busy and life is so fast paced it is often difficult to slow down enough to eat healthy. With processed foods all around us it is refreshing to enjoy a tasty and healthy seafood dinner on occasion. The ocean does not add harmful ingredients to its bounty. It simply nurtures its inhabitants until they are delivered straight to your door. Stay healthy by including tasty shellfish items into your busy lifestyle.
Do not worry about not living close to the ocean or in a coastal region. Even if you live in the central United States you can still get fresh shellfish to appease your tastebuds. Online seafood vendors, such as Quality Fresh Seafood offer a great selection at excellent prices and can ship your ordered seafood and shellfish straight to your door. It is no longer necessary to only have fresh shellfish during a coastal vacation. You can enjoy it anytime you like.

Healthy Lifestyle Tips for Seniors

July 20th, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

Nutrition is important at every stage of life. Regardless of age, we all require healthy foods to help our bodies thrive, but seniors and elderly people have specialized nutritional needs.
There are several factors affecting nutrition and healthy dietary choices for seniors. One area that greatly affects the health needs of the elderly is basic body composition. Hormonal activity, for example, decreases as a person ages. This results in weight gain and the loss of muscle and bone.
Here are some other health considerations for people enjoying their senior years:
Water
As we age, the amount of water found in our bodies naturally decreases. Certain personal habits can also affect these fluid levels. Many seniors don’t drink enough water simply because they don’t feel thirsty. Others find it inconvenient or even difficult to pour a glass of water. These difficulties can cause elderly people to become dehydrated very easily. It is recommended that seniors drink at least one ounce of water for every 2.2 pounds of body weight.
Pack in the Protein
Protein is an essential nutrient at every stage of life. It supports a healthy immune system and prevents wasted muscle. Even though energy needs are decreased in the elderly, it’s still important for seniors to eat high quality proteins such as eggs, lean meats, fish and poultry.
Fiber and Carbs
It’s no surprise to learn that seniors require additional fiber in the diet. Food rich in fiber, when combined with plenty of water, helps to prevent constipation. Active seniors will also thrive on the carbohydrates found in pasta, bread, cereals and other energy-producing grain products.
Good Fats
The body’s natural metabolism slows down as age increases, so nutrition for seniors means less fat in their diets. It’s important to note that fat should be limited, but not eliminated altogether. You can trim the amount of daily fat intake by choosing fish, lean meats, low-fat dairy products, and fat-free or fat-reduced preparation methods.
Keep Up Your Calcium
One vital element of nutrition for seniors is calcium, and many people just don’t get enough of it. The calcium requirement for the elderly is about 1,500 mg per day. People often struggle with digestive problems from drinking milk, but there are many alternative calcium sources. Non-fat powdered milk can be used in many recipes. Other foods such as low-fat cheese, yogurt and even broccoli are delicious calcium-rich options.
Iron Deficiency
Seniors should eat a diet rich in natural sources of iron, including choices like lean red meats and breakfast cereals. Too many older women and men live with iron deficiencies.
Zinc
Many seniors neglect zinc as an important contributor to good nutrition. The fact that zinc isn’t readily absorbed into the body compounds the problem. Including healthy servings of poultry, meat and fish can help seniors to meet their daily zinc requirements.
Vitamin B12 and Atrophic Gastritis
A common problem with elderly men and women is B12 deficiency caused by a condition called atrophic gastritis. The vitamin B12 can only be absorbed when an intrinsic factor is present in the stomach. However, a person with atrophic gastritis will suffer from an inflammation of the stomach that causes bacterial overgrowth and impedes the intrinsic factor. Patients suffering vitamin B12 deficiency should talk to a doctor about supplemental options.
To grow and remain healthy, people of all ages require a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Seniors face additional age-related health concerns and should be particularly aware of their nutritional needs. Aging brings changes to every body, but good nutrition helps many seniors continue to lead vital, active lifestyles.

Were You Part Of The Collective Sigh After Christmas?

July 20th, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

Christmas is 277 days away. Time to kick back and enjoy spring – or is it?
I have quite a few birthday and anniversary gifts to buy between now and then. And there’ll be a few engagements and weddings – and showers of one type or another. Oh, I forgot about graduation and baptism gifts.
Darn! There’s holiday gifting too, but don’t panic. The more imagination you put into holiday gifts, the more money you save.
Most people give champagne for New Year’s. Instead, give my grandmother’s hangover recipe. Just hearing the ingredients is a sobering experience.
No candy for Valentines – too expensive. Instead, get day passes from your gym. There’re free. If that makes you feel a little cheap, cut them into heart shapes.
St. Patrick’s Day’s in March. Present yourself as the designated driver.
No candy for Easter either; but in keeping with tradition, the 99 cent store should have rabbits’ feet. No, maybe “Paying Taxes for Dummies” would be better.
I’ve thought and thought, but there’s now way out of giving mothers flowers for their day. After all, they gave us life.
For Father’s Day every dad would like a bigger screen TV, but who can afford it? Instead, offer to move his chair closer to the TV he has now.
What’s July 4th without fireworks; and what’s fireworks without – a first aid kit.
Then there’s August. August is a gift you can give yourself. It has no major holiday!
Then it’s Labor Day. Offer to go to the thrift store for your friends. Take the maternity clothes they’ve stored in their attics for unsuspecting daughters-in-law.
By Halloween you realize Christmas is only two months away. If you look in the mirror, you’ll get inspiration to make an inexpensive, but very scary mask for you child.
Thankfully, there are several inexpensive gifts for Thanksgiving, for which your thanks is combined with giving – No-Doz, bigger belts and twelve-step programs for college football withdrawal.
Now it’s Christmas, but again don’t panic. There’s one gift you can give anyone. It’s the one that fits all occasions – money.
You don’t have to worry about size, including batteries, duplicating someone else’s gift or giving something the person already has.
Okay. Some people think giving money is crass and shows lack of effort and imagination. Well, excuse me. It took effort to earn the money; and if the recipient doesn’t know what to do with it – that shows lack of imagination!

Five Great Drinks for Summer Entertaining

July 20th, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

Faced with planning an upcoming, outdoor summer party, I spent about an hour on the internet a few days ago in search of some festive summer drinks. I couldn’t believe how many great sounding recipes I encountered. Most of them were entirely new to me.
Then, I did some research. I mixed about 15 drinks myself for taste tests at home, and tried a few more at a friendly area bar. I discovered that prime time TV isn’t quite as bad after a few drinks, and I found some great tasting drinks. Here are my five favorites.
I found the Rasmopolitan at http://www.liclubs.com. It’s a combination of 1 ounce of Stoli, a half ounce of Triple Sec, a half ounce of lime juice, and enough cranberry juice to fill a tall glass. Just mix it, strain it if you wish, and garnish with a lime wedge.
Another of what turned out to be one of my favorites was also on liclubs.com, something called a Sex on the Beach. This delicious concoction contains an ounce of pineapple juice, an equal amount of cranberry juice, 1/2 ounce of vodka, and a half once of peach schnapps. I shook mine with a few ice cubes and loved it.
Dreamsmixer.com had a simple but great recipe for a drink they appropriately call a Creamy Root Beer Float. Fill a frosted beer mug or similar vessel with ice. Add about 2 ounces of Dr. Mcgillicuddy’s Vanilla Schnapps, then add root beer to nearly fill the glass, and drop in a teaspoon of cream.
It must be apparent by now that I’m not a beer and shot kind of guy. In fact, I’m not much of a drinker at all, but I really enjoyed the Strawberry Colada a local bartender fixed for me, following the recipe I found at frontgate.com; one and a quarter ounce of light rum, an ounce of pina colada mix, an ounce of strawberry daiquiri mix, and 1/4 of an ounce of pineapple juice. After blending and pouring, an orange slice and a cherry make an attractive, great tasting garnish.
No party or event is complete without a great alcohol free alternative, and here it is, courtesy of recipelink.com. Freeze a bowl, a 16 ounce glass, and a Butterfinger candy bar for at least 30 minutes (longer is probably better). When ready to serve, crush the candy bar into pieces and put it aside…you’ll use 2/3 of it in a minute. Mix two cups of vanilla ice cream and 1/4 cup of milk in the frozen bowl until it is creamy and stir in the Butterfinger pieces. Pour the mixture into the frozen glass and serve with a spoon.
I would be very surprised if you and your family or guests don’t enjoy these drinks as much as I and those who joined me in my taste tests did. If I’m wrong, I can promise you’ll find lots of alternatives to suit all tastes on the internet.
